What does an app actually cost in 2026?
Clutch, which bases its figures on client reviews of the developers it lists, puts the average app development project at $90,780.11, or $8,188.44 a month over about 11 months. Most app developers listed there charge $25–$49 an hour (Clutch, updated September 21, 2026).
An average across every reviewed project doesn’t tell you what yours will cost, though. A focused first version on one platform costs much less than a cross-platform app with accounts, payments, integrations and a real design pass, and custom hardware, heavy data work or strict compliance push it higher. Our MVP cost calculator and app cost calculator show how scope moves the number. Quotes far below the others often mean less testing, thinner architecture or a junior team.
What drives the price up or down?
Five things move the number more than anything else. Scope (how many real features, not screens). Backend complexity (a static app is cheap; one with real-time data, roles and payments is not). Design (a template costs little; bespoke UX costs a lot and is often worth it). Integrations (each third-party system adds work and risk). And the team's hourly rate, which varies widely by region. The last one is why the same app can cost very different amounts depending on who builds it.
Why cross-platform isn't automatically cheaper
Flutter and React Native let one codebase serve iOS and Android, which does save money — on the parts that were duplicated. It saves nothing on the hard parts: the backend, the integrations, the design, the testing. So a cross-platform app usually costs less than two separate native apps, but nowhere near half. If you only need one platform to start, native can be the cheaper first step.
What's different about the cost of an iOS app?
For the build itself, scope, backend and team rate matter more than the platform. The differences sit around the build. Apple charges 99 USD per membership year for the Developer Program, against a one-time US$25 registration fee on Google Play (Apple, Play Console Help). Since April 28, 2026, apps uploaded to App Store Connect must be built with Xcode 26 or later (Apple), so the team needs current Apple tooling for every release. And every version goes through App Review, which Apple says handles 90% of submissions in under 48 hours (Apple); why apps get rejected covers what to prepare before submitting.
How to keep the cost honest
Insist on a scoped estimate, not a single number. A serious team will break the quote into features and flag what's uncertain. Ask what's excluded — backend, app-store setup, post-launch fixes are common surprises. And treat a quote that's far below the others as a warning, not a win; the gap usually reappears later as rework.
What does an app cost to keep running after launch?
Launch starts a second budget, and part of it is set by the app stores, not by your vendor. Those rules are why maintenance isn’t optional.
- Apple’s yearly fee. The Apple Developer Program costs 99 USD per membership year (Apple).
- Apple’s build requirements. Since April 28, 2026, apps uploaded to App Store Connect must be built with Xcode 26 or later (Apple). If a project has sat untouched, even a one-line fix starts with moving it to the current tools.
- Google Play’s yearly target API level. New apps and updates must now target Android 16 (API level 36), and existing apps must target at least Android 15 to stay available to new users on newer Android versions (Play Console Help). An Android app nobody updates gradually stops reaching new users on new phones.
- Removal of abandoned apps. Apple can remove apps that haven’t been updated in three years and are downloaded very rarely, after an email notice (Apple, 2022).
- Services that grow with use: hosting, push notifications, email delivery and other third-party tools, billed monthly.
- The work itself: bug fixes, testing on each new OS release, library upgrades and the small changes users ask for.
Maintenance is often put at 15–25% of the build cost a year. We haven’t found published data behind that range, so treat it as a rule of thumb and build the budget from the lines above. Ask the vendor to quote maintenance separately from the build: what’s included each month, how fast they respond when a bug breaks the app, and the rate for anything outside the plan. One commenter in r/startups put it more plainly: budget for ongoing support before you sign for the build (r/startups, July 2025). Keep the store accounts in your company’s name, too, or every renewal and update depends on the vendor (who owns your code, domain and ad accounts).
